Reimagining philanthropy in the Global South in a post-COVID world

While there have always been high levels of philanthropic giving in the Global South, the urgency and unexpectedness of COVID-19 transformed the parameters within which philanthropy operates. The pandemic has dramatically disrupted the bureaucratic, hierarchical relationship between Global North and Global South philanthropic organizations, and a more dynamic, open relationship that allows more local capability development and the effective use of local knowledge has emerged. Three important trends have characterized this new era: a focus on building infrastructure, capacity and knowledge by funding networks; an increased collaboration between Global South governments and local philanthropists; and the importance of funding core costs and providing unrestricted funding. The book Reimagining Philanthropy in the Global South (Cambridge University Press) brings together 13 Global South philanthropy leaders and examines how newer models of philanthropy are tackling development challenges, including poverty, inequality and access to healthcare and education, and questions how organizations are coping with structural changes in donor-driven philanthropy; how changes in traditional grant making are impacting the imperatives of recipient organizations; and how indigenous philanthropy is making a difference.
