Philanthropy rises in the East: Trends and challenges for Asian philanthropy

Over the past decades, Asian countries have benefited from an impressive economic growth. Asia leads the world in the number of new “high net worth individuals” (HNWIs), while a growing middle class now enjoys consumerism. Meanwhile, entrenched poverty, income inequalities and largescale environmental issues have become major concerns, especially in demographic giants such as India and China. Building on this “new wealth” linked to business successes, philanthropy is a vibrant phenomenon among Asian nations.
