With the launch in 2003 of the Chair in Social Entrepreneurship, followed, in 2009, by the Institute for Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship (IIES), ESSEC Business School has developed a unique expertise with regard to education and research in the fields of entrepreneurship, strategy and management of private initiatives serving the common good.

In January 2011, ESSEC Business School furthered this development and launched a new Chair in Philanthropy, capitalizing on the expertise already acquired in social entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility, impact measurement, and equal opportunities in higher education.

The mission of the ESSEC Chair in Philanthropy is to study, enhance and promote the knowledge on philanthropy and its role in society. We understand philanthropy broadly as all voluntary transfers of resources from private individuals and organizations, with the goal to serve the common good.

In order to accomplish its mission, the Chair has set itself the following objectives:
  • To further theoretical and applied research on philanthropy whilst meeting standards of academic excellence,
  • To develop academic research networks and best practices in philanthropy,
  • To promote and further an understanding of the role of philanthropy in Europe and how it is practiced by individuals and private organizations,
  • To address key players in the philanthropic sector, strengthening their capabilities for analysis, management, and governance.

The Chair in Philanthropy is held by Professor Anne-Claire Pache, Member of the ESSEC Faculty.
Dr. Arthur Gautier is the Chair Executive Director and ESSEC Researcher.
The Chair Assistant is Ms. Gilberte Nguyen.


The ESSEC Chair in Philanthropy is opening 2 full-time Research Fellow positions to reinforce its research efforts and to develop its activities:
  • one-year (12-month) contract, from September 2014 to August 2015.
  • open ended contract, starting September 2014.

We are looking for highly motivated junior scholars with a European and international outlook whose research interests and skills are aligned with the Chair’s objectives.

The Research Fellows will work under the supervision of the Chair Executive Director and the scientific responsibility of the Chair Holder, within the team of the ESSEC Institute for Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship. The work environment will be in English, but knowledge of French will be a plus.

Located at ESSEC Business School’s main campus in Cergy-Pontoise (40 minutes from Paris).
Salary and benefits commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Specific duties will include:
  1. contribute to the definition of chair research agenda
  2. manage and contribute to specific research projects within the Chair’s agenda
  3. manage and contribute to the production of case studies
  4. disseminate research findings, in particular through peer-reviewed publications and conferences
  5. assist with chair management, coordination, fundraising, and reporting

Qualifications required:
  • Doctorate or PhD in management or social sciences
  • Knowledge of and interest for the field of philanthropy
  • Ability to publish research in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Fluent English; French is appreciated
